An anonymous and welcoming prelude ushers us into the world of Renaissance villanescas and villancicos, the Spanish world, with its lamenting melodies and exuberant rhythms. It is also the world of La Tricotea, which on this CD treats us to the brilliant masterpieces of composers such as Victoria, Morales, and Guerrero as well as great medieval masters.
The much-heralded ensemble performs these gems on an unusual combination of musical instruments: baroque boxwood oboe and bassoon, brassy saxophones, and scintillating percussion, the first ensemble of its kind.
This, their first CD, received the maximum five-star rating from numerous prominent music critics who acclaimed the “mature musicianship”, “tightly-knit performance” and the “aristocratic”, “extraordinarily exquisite” sound, labelling the recording a “bull’s-eye”.
